Certified and registered languages
Washington State Courts distinguish between two types of interpreters: certified and registered. Credentialing is overseen by the Administrative Office of Courts (AOC).
Certified languages
Requires passing a strict written exam and an intensive three-mode oral exam. This applies to high-demand languages like Spanish, Russian, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Korean, and Arabic.

Registered languages
Covers less common languages where, to be accredited, interpreters must pass a written exam, a background check, and complete an Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI).
