The Police Explorer Program is a volunteer opportunity for young people to learn about law enforcement through training, meetings, and community events. It gives them hands‑on experience while supporting local police and community activities.
Exploring careers in law enforcement
Police Explorers is a volunteer program for young people ages 14 – 21 who are interested in law enforcement. You don’t need to live in any specific city to join; members come from all over King County.
Some Explorers hope to become police officers, while others just want to learn more about the job. Explorers help with community events like National Night Out, Shop with a Cop, and sometimes help with parking control at special events
How to join
Here are the requirements to join the Explorers:
- Fill out a written application
- Complete an interview
- Pass a background check (including references and criminal history)
- Have at least a 2.0 GPA
- Have no criminal history
- Commit to volunteering for at least one year
Where we meet
Explorers volunteer at least four hours a month, mainly by attending meetings. Meetings are held every other Monday from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Burien Police Department (14905 6th Avenue SW). Non-volunteers can attend but need to contact the program beforehand.
