Concealed pistol license

A concealed pistol license (CPL) allows qualified individuals to legally carry a concealed pistol in public while following state and local laws. Learn how to apply for, renew, or replace a CPL.

Where to apply

If you own a firearm, it’s important to know and follow the laws about using and carrying it. In Washington, you must pass a background check before you can receive a CPL.

If you live in King County, or if you live in another state, you can apply through the King County Sheriff’s Office. If you live in a city, you can also apply through your local police department.

Types of CPL applications

New (original)

You’ll need to schedule a fingerprint appointment.

Renewal

You can apply for renewal up to 90 days before your current CPL expires.

Late renewal

If your CPL has expired, you can still renew it within 90 days after the expiration date.

Replacement

If your CPL is lost, stolen, or damaged, you can apply for a replacement no matter which agency originally issued your CPL.
