Ordinances and resolutions

The City Council takes action during open public meetings by adopting ordinances, passing resolutions and approving motions.

Ordinances

A city ordinance is a local law or regulation adopted by the City Council that applies only within the city’s boundaries. Ordinances carry the force of law within the city and typically govern local issues, such as zoning, parking, noise and public safety.

Resolutions

A resolution is an official statement or expression of the City Council. Resolutions are passed to address temporary matters, establish administrative policies, or make declarations without adopting a permanent, legally binding local law.

Motions

A motion provides authority to do a specified act.  The proposed action may be substantive or it may express a certain view or direct that a particular action be taken, such as an investigation.

A motion is often used to direct the city manager to sign a contract that the governing body has approved.
