Adopting a storm drain gives residents an opportunity to help reduce flooding and keep Puget Sound clean.
Clean storm drains protect lakes, creeks, and rivers
We have over 4,000 storm drains throughout our City. Whenever it rains, storm drains carry rainwater along with debris and pollutants from the street into the nearest lake, creek, or river. These pollutants can include litter, leaves, and chemicals from cars and yards.
In our City, stormwater flows to Angle Lake, SeaTac Des Moines Creek, Miller and Walker creeks, and the Green and Duwamish rivers. Most of these water bodies then flow directly to Puget Sound.
You can help reduce the amount of debris and pollutants entering water bodies by committing to keep your local storm drain clear.
Benefits of the program
- Reduces localized flooding
- Reduces pollutants in local water bodies, which makes water safer for swimming, salmon, and orcas
- Shows your neighbors that you care about your creek, lake, or Puget Sound—and encourages them to keep local drains clear
- Be part of a region-wide effort to reduce stormwater pollution.
Cities across the country have Adopt-a-Drain programs to help keep thousands of pounds of debris out of local watersheds.
We’re one of almost a dozen Western Washington cities using this program to reduce pollution in Puget Sound.
