SEATAC PROPOSITION 1 UPDATE

November 6, 2013

The City of SeaTac cast their votes yesterday regarding Proposition 1 which would raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour, a 63 percent increase from Washington’s current hourly minimum rate of $9.19.An estimated 6,300 workers at 72 airport-related businesses in and around Seattle-Tacoma International Airport would be affected.

Update on Proposition 1 at a glance:

· At this time, the election has not been certified.

· This was a citizen’s initiative, not put forward or endorsed by the City of SeaTac.

· To date, the City has not conducted an analysis of the impacts of administration of the ordinance to the City for the following reasons:

o We did not feel it was the best use of our resources to conduct an analysis unless the Proposition passed

o There is a pending court case in Superior Court, brought by Alaska Airlines and Filo Foods, that could impact the application and enforcement of the ordinance

Should Proposition 1 pass, the measure would take effect Jan. 1, 2014. Follow the link to the Ordinance, click here.
