INCLEMENT WEATHER COLLECTION
Collections Recovery Plan – week of February 11:
As of 7am on 2/12, all collections were cancelled due to unsafe road conditions. For some customers, this will be the second week where collection has been impacted. We are hopeful that tomorrow’s weather forecast will allow us to resume normal collections, are preparing accordingly, and will be prioritizing the collection of customers who have experienced a prolonged service interruption.
- Assuming conditions are safe on tomorrow (Wednesday 2/13) Recology plans to attempt to collect Monday customers and will push back all collections this week by one day. A prerecorded message will be sent to all customers impacted by service delays today.
- In addition, we have established two emergency collection points where residents who have experienced a prolonged delay can drop off accumulated waste. The emergency collection points are in the lower parking lot at SeaTac Community Center (13635 24th Ave S) as well as at Valley Ridge Park (4644 S 188th St). Today we had 35 visitors that utilized these emergency collection points. Tomorrow, 2/13, we will be accessible to the public at the same locations from 7am – 3pm.
- We have been prioritizing collections to essential commercial customers such as SeaTac International Airport, hotels and grocery stores, and will continue to do so.
We appreciate your patience as we work through the logistics of responding to this weather event.

Changes to the Recycling Program
The SeaTac City Council approved a temporary rate increase for the City’s waste hauler Recology Cleanscapes. The rate increase was driven by China’s new policy to no longer accept 50% of the world’s recycling materials.
Previously, SeaTac’s waste hauler sold a majority of its collected recycling materials to China. The latest move by China, has caused the value of recycled materials to significantly drop and our local waste hauler, Recology CleanScapes, to request an increase in solid waste fees in order to remain solvent.
China stopped accepting recycling materials due to contamination levels. Contamination is caused when plastic films, such as plastic grocery bags, are left in recycling. Also, when plastic or metal containers, such as yogurt and soda cans, are not 100% cleaned of food or products, they are considered contaminated.
The SeaTac City Council responded in a few way to the soaring cost of recycling materials:
- By passing a temporary rate increase that will be evaluated every six months.
- By removing plastic bags/film from the list of acceptable recycling materials.
- By allowing Recology Cleanscapes to enforce contamination standards on Multi-family and Commercial customers.
Information on what the contamination enforcement program looks like can be found on Recology Cleanscapes website.
You can learn more about how China has impacted the recycling world and what you can do to help by watching this video.
Please remember, all recycling needs to be EMPTY, CLEAN AND DRY, for SeaTac to continue to recycle our waste, save money and preserve our environment.

REDUCE YOUR 'WASTE' LINE
SeaTac Commercial customers' garbage service now includes recycling collection service at no additional charge. Customers will be able to select from several different garbage containers sizes and save money by recycling more or reducing waste altogether.
For residential customers, your solid waste rates are based on the size of your can. The smaller the can, the less you pay. As you eliminate more recyclables and food & yard waste from your garbage container, you may be able to downsize to a smaller garbage container and a lower rate. Recycling and food & yard waste are part of the basic residential curbside service at no additional cost.
Basic rates may be reduced by 50% if the principal residential customer meets the Recology CleanScapes contract designated low-income requirement AND is either a senior citizen (62 years of age or older) or receiving permanent disability benefits from Social Security or the Military (proof of permanent disability benefits required). Customers must register with the City (which forwards the information to Recology CleanScapes) to qualify for the 50% discount. The resident has to occupy the residence and pay the bills. Please contact Public Works Programs Coordinator Mason Giem at 206.973.4763 to find out if you qualify and if so, to set up an appointment to fill out the forms.
If you need help with your garbage/recycling/food and yard waste service, please call Recology CleanScapes at 206.767.1166 or call Public Works Programs Coordinator Mason Giem with the City of SeaTac at 206.973.4763 with any questions/complaints.
Single Stream - All in One Recycling
Commingled is a recycling program that does not require sorting by the consumer. When sorting is not required, recycling levels increase. Recyclers get a simple recycling program, and a simpler system equals higher participation levels - which results in more of the right type of materials being recycled. Please make sure all recycling is completely clean and dry before putting into recycling container. Examine recycling guides at Recology's website for more information on what can be put into your recycling cart.
